French Connection: Hot, hot, hot high street.
I know it’s still only January, and the clocks have yet to go back, and we’re still driving home from work in the dark, but I just can’t help getting excited about this. If you are not yet familiar with the “This Is the Woman” campaigns from the previous two seasons, check out YouTube. In the mean time, read this.
From what I’ve seen of the new collection, French Connection will be a one-stop shop for next to nearly every key trend of this season. White, cream, pleats, brights, chiffon, leather, lace and broderie anglaise…I could go on. The photos from the new campaign are enough to make me long to move to a warm European country and wear white, ride horses through villages and visit quirky old, clammy bars for a lifetime.
See pictures of the au-natural, fresh-faced models, dressed in floral smock dresses, with delicate pleat details and ¾ length sleeves. Then there are the white bits; opaque, chiffon and silks; cute, button blouses; clean cut, pleated skirts; a gorgeous white thick lacy dress (also available in navy) that just hugs your figure, and broderie anglaise dresses, modelled by a woman just riding a bicycle, naturally. I have two favourite white pieces- both pleated and strapless- one with wrapped material at the waist, the other that literally hangs, but in the most beautiful way to accentuate those lady lumps!
If you can’t hack white, follow the seventies trend which I keep banging on about- there are amazing maxi dresses this summer- from dark pink and pleated to simple, tied-at-the waist navy cotton, not to mention the metallic draped playsuits. There are also classic, basic pieces in a variety of colours, bold coral dresses with embellished neck details, and the most clean-cut tuxedo-short combo I have seen in ages on the high street. Of course, it’s in white, but it has a simple one line navy detail around the neckline: simple, but genius.
The new campaign exclaims: “You are unsolvable mysterie, puzzle unworkable, cryptic galaxie? Is this you? Then you are a very special thing… You are woman.” Of course we are, and I have to agree with French Connection this summer, that we should most certainly embrace every side to being such a creation. This is the woman, and she wants summer, right now…
