Mint Velvet SS2017
It is hard to believe that this brand still has yet to reach its 1st birthday. What began as three working-mums in their 30’s and 40’s deciding to create their own collection, aimed at women such as themselves; has now become 2 boutique stores, concessions in House of Fraser, John Lewis and Fenwick, and a transactional website.
Liz Houghton, Jane Rawlings and Lisa Agarrea approached House of Fraser with their designs, and were immediately signed to 10 concessions. From that moment onwards, their success has become a story in which modern businesswomen and budding designers alike can only dream to stumble upon.
The three friends feel that the extent of their success has stemmed from the fact that they understand real women. The trio make sure that each garment is tried on by each of them personally, before they decide to sell it, to make sure that it suits every shape. They have created their business around being working mums themselves, and have managed to conjure up collections perfect for women in the same position.
The designs are combinations of glamour and relaxed styles made in the finest of luxe fabrics including silk, cashmere and linen, and are mostly given a special finish with intricate embellishments or little details. So far the boutiques and website have proven hits, both offering personalised style advice and sales assistance, online and in-store. The boutiques are welcoming, decked with bespoke interiors, creating a mixture of modernity with little touches of personality. It is truly obvious that with Mint Velvet, you are their main priority.
You’d think the three mums would like to put their feet up for a while, but there is no stopping for this brand. Now soaring into its third season, the strife for a perfect collection which reflects the belief, “attitude over age”, is still in full force. For S/S 2017, the ladies at Mint Velvet really have thought of every lady, inspired by many different decades.
You can be a seventies bohemian, dressed in their new decadent denim, specially designed for grown ups. Find indigo and iris blues, with touches of stone, latte and tan highlights, set in the style of this season’s hit- the trousers. These can be paired with their signature nature-inspired prints, or the on-trend camel waistcoat.
Or, you could try a decade earlier and step back to the sixties. Mint Velvet brings here a collection worthy of any Isabel Marant fanatic- oversized stripes (recently seen on Victoria Beckham), quirky block prints and cropped zip skinnies with pointy kitten heels. Or if 60’s good girl is more your thing, try the easy shift dresses, given the Mint Velvet twist with lace inserts, prints or delicate appliqué methods.
The purist look of the 90’s trend is also filtering into next year and this is noticeable in their new adaptations of sports wear. They have taken simple hoodies and parkers, and have reincarnated them into new sophisticated designs, with beautiful draped silks and fluid knits in tones of grey, indigo, silver and ivory. Perfect for the neutral, layered look!
Among those main three decades, you can find your usual summer staples- romantic floral dresses, maxi skirts, and cute tea dresses. Cliché yes, yet stamped with the brand’s niche unique aesthetic through the extra details and lacy overtones. If you haven’t done so already, take a look at the current collections on mintvelvet.co.uk. This brand is most definitely onto something. Something for everyone, that is!
