Miss LaLas Boudoir- Shop of the Month
I have to admit when I hear the words, ‘vintage inspired’, these days, I can become quite dubious. It can often mean that the only ‘vintage’ thing about the whole ensemble is the model wearing red lipstick and as people are now claiming the 90’s are ‘vintage’ it leaves a lot to the imagination on these disappearing decades!
There is also the quality factor and the stitch projection- all of my 40’s and early 50’s clothes and lingerie are so durable they were made to climb Mount Everest!
So on walking past Miss Lala’s Boudoir in Covent Garden, I was pleasantly surprised to see a true replica of a 50’s kitsch boudoir as I sailed past.
Quality rather than quantity, I found the boutique to be laiden with one off Elvgrin inspired pieces in pure pin up devotion- Chiffon negligees, satin, plunge playing card bow bras, knickers woven into a heart around the derriere and enough pastel frills, lace and silk to get even the non-underwear shopper excited!
Best off all the décor of the shop is like you’ve stepped into a Wonderland antique sweet shop, gold rails and satin Parisian domed chairs, no wonder it’s a hit for Scarlett Johansson, Gwen Stefani, Kate Hudson and Helena Bonham Carter.
Miss Lala herself, Fine Rees, began in 2004 when after returning from L.A, she opened the boutique in Primrose Hill, and moved to Covent Garden in 2008. Jules Oliver raved about it in interviews and even Meg Matthews had a stint at shop girl!
In 2008 Fine also managed to secure the deal of making her own exclusive line, Miss LaLa which was snapped up by Harvey Nichols and is now in its fourth season. It is also stocked by Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum and Mason and Fenwick’s.
The boutique also stocks other fabulous fashion, hosiery and accessory labels including Fifi Chachnil and best of all, my favourite, the new Vivien Westwood Melissa shoes! Put it all together and you’ve got sauce from a decadent time gone by, and after all, it may be freezing now but on the horizon it will soon be time for floaty numbers and spring time peep toes again, hurrah!
